Schots monument
..........................

The Scottish Monument is located on the Frezenberg, a strategic point during the First World War. The monument commemorates all people of Scottish decendance who were involved in the 'Great War'. Is is a High Cross carved out of "Corennie Pink", a type of granite from Scotland. It is designed by Dirk Uytterschout and created by Fyfe Glenrock, a company based in Aberdeen.

Our band was present at the unveiling and played at the tattoo that evening, together with other bands including the pipe band of the Scots Guards. Every year we organise a commemoration at the monument near the end of september. Due to the link between the band and the monument, it has become one of our most important symbols.

Passchendaele 1917 Pipes & Drums

In 2006 the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 and the Fleming Pipe Band decided to establish a pipe band that relates to “the Bloody Fields of Flanders” in an authentic way. The “Passchendaele 1917 Pipes & Drums”- an absolute world first – was born.

From 2006 up until may 2009 the band performed under two names. When playing in civilian uniform it was called the Fleming Pipe Band, during commemorations it performed as Passchendaele 1917 Pipes & Drums. To end this confusing situation the band members decided to drop the name Fleming Pipe Band.

Aims

The ‘Passchendaele 1917 Pipes & Drums’ aims to reconstruct a Scottish World War I batalion band. To this end investments in historicaly correct clothing and drums anno 1917 have been made.

Musicaly we aim to play authentic battlefield tunes. Every Scottish batalion had its own pipe band. Tunes that referred to memorable moments from the batalion's history became part of the batalion's collective memory. Therefore, such tunes as ‘The Road to Passchendaele’, ‘The Burning Mill of Mesinnes’, ‘The Bloody fields of Flanders’ are an essential part of the repertoire.

Curriculum

The band had its first big performances during the commenmorative year 2007, with the ’90 years Battle of Passendale’ events. The band performed at ceremonies for Irish, South-African, ANZAC, Canadian en Scottish delegations. On the 25th of august 2007 the band joined the Scots Guards (1st Batalion) , Piper to the Queen Mother and former PM of the London Scottisch John Spoore, and former director of the Edinburgh Tattoo PM Gavin Stodart in the Scottish Tattoo at Zonnebeke.

On the Road to Passchendaele

In 2006 two members of the band asked well known Pipe Major Gavin Stoddart if he could write a tune as a tribute for the new Scottish Monument at Zonnebeke. Gavin was prepared to write a ¾ march and promised to be present at the unveiling of the monument. The lyrics for the tune were written by Alan Brydon. Both gentlemen presented their tune - supported by a massed band - at the tattoo at Zonnebeke the 25th of august 2007.

In the meantime the tune has become a frequently heard piece at commemorations. It is one of the band's most played tunes and can be regarded as our own "regimental tune".
